Next, add a small amount of lime or dolomite, to the trenches and mix it in. About a bag of lime or dolomite per 50′ row will be enough. Then, take some fresh cuttings from the cane and place them in the trenches about two feet apart. Make sure the cane has at least three nodes – 1/2″-1″ below the soil level. Now, cover the trenches with some soil and then water them well. You will begin to see little shoots sprout up in a few weeks.
As the plants begin to grow, fertilize them with a 5-10-10 fertilizer. Now all you have to do is wait and let nature take it’s course! In the summer and fall months, you can harvest your crop. Cut the cane at the base of the plant and you have your sugarcane! Growing sugarcane in rows is an easy way to get a great crop and it works outside of the tropics too! With just a few easy steps, you can have sugarcane growing in no time.
