Materials Needed

Step 1: Cutting the Metal
Start by cutting your scrap metal into small, triangular shapes using an angle grinder or hacksaw. The size of the caltrops will depend on your preference, but aim for a length of around 2-3 inches for each side of the triangle.
Step 2: Shaping the Triangles
Next, shape one of the corners of each triangle into a slightly longer and sharper point. This will be the end that faces up when the caltrop is deployed. Use the angle grinder to carefully grind down the metal to achieve the desired sharpness.
Step 3: Welding
Once you have shaped all the triangles, it’s time to assemble your caltrops. Take three triangles and align the unsharpened corners, creating a pyramid shape. Use a welder to join the three pieces together at the base, ensuring a secure connection.
Step 4: Finishing Touches
After welding the triangles together, you can add extra reinforcement for increased durability. Weld additional metal rods or plates around the base of the caltrop to give it a sturdier structure.
