Making echinacea tincture at home is a great way to take advantage of the powerful health benefits of this herb. Echinacea is well known for its ability to reduce colds and flu-like symptoms, but it also contains many other medicinal qualities. To make an echinacea tincture, the plant’s root, stems, and leaves must be harvested and prepared.
First, search for echinacea plants in fields, clearings, and prairie-like environments. If you are unsure how to identify echinacea, reference my video on identification. Once you have sourced your echinacea, use a shovel to access the roots. Be careful while digging not to damage any other plants or include them in your final product.
At home, pick off any bad-looking leaves or damaged spots and rinse the plant material off thoroughly. Use a soft bristled toothbrush to remove any dirt inside of the root crevices. When the plant material is clean and dry, cut it up and place it in a jar with your preferred menstruum. Your echinacea tincture is now ready to sit for 6-8 weeks before bottling.
Making echinacea tincture yourself is not only relatively easy, but also more cost effective than purchasing pre-bottled tinctures from stores. Harvesting your own echinacea allows you to gain access to all of the plant’s medicinal qualities without spending a large sum of money on store-bought versions. After 6-8 weeks, label and store your echinacea tincture away from light and heat for future use in aiding with colds and flu-like symptoms.
